Effects of different types of vermicompost on the growth and rooting characteristics of three rose rootstocks

Abstract

A glasshouse experiment based on different combinations of vermicompost (tea, twig and food waste) with sand on three rootstock of roses (Rosa indica Thory., Rosa chinensis Jacq. and Rosa damascena Dieck.) was conducted at Agricultural Research and Veterinary Experimental Station, King Faisal University, Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia during October 2014. The experiment was laid out on two-factor factorial arrangement using a completely randomized design with three replications. The vermicompost treatments were: T1, Sand + Tea waste vermicompost (1:1 v/v); T2, Sand + Tea waste vermicompost (1:2 v/v); T3, Sand + Tea waste vermicompost (1:3 v/v); T4, Sand + Twigs vermicompost (1:1 v/v); T5, Sand + Twigs vermicompost (1:2 v/v); T6, Sand + Twigs vermicompost (1:3 v/v); T7, Sand + Food waste vermicompost (1:1 v/v); T8, Sand + Food waste vermicompost (1:2 v/ v) and T9, Sand + Food waste vermicompost (1:3 v/v). All plant growth and rooting characteristics were significantly (P<0.05) affected by different vermicompost treatments. A varied response of rose rootstocks was observed to different sources of vermicompost, however, their trend was more or less similar such as growth and rooting response (days taken to sprouting, shoot length, shoot fresh and dry weight, number of leaves, number of roots, root length, root fresh and dry weight and plant fresh and dry weight) of all three rootstocks were significantly positive when grown in Sand + Food waste vermicompost (1:3 v/v). However, there was a significant difference among three rootstocks regarding their growth and rooting traits. Therefore, it is concluded that Rosa damascena and Rosa indica are the most suitable rootstocks and the best media for rootstock cutting’s establishment is Sand + Food waste vermicompost (1:3 v/v) under the agro-climatic condition of Al-Ahsa, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
